PLUS Grid Storage has commenced construction of its Steel River East Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Newcastle, marking an important milestone for the project and the broader battery platform supported by the Energy Security Corporation.
Located at the Steel River Industrial Estate, the 200 MW / 400 MWh Steel River East BESS is PLUS Grid Storage’s first grid-scale battery project to begin construction. Once operational, it will provide additional storage capacity in one of the state’s key electricity load centres, helping support a reliable and secure electricity system as NSW’s energy system changes.
The project forms part of the ESC’s $100 million investment in PLUS Grid Storage’s battery platform across Sydney, Newcastle and the Hunter Central Coast.
The ESC congratulates PLUS Grid Storage and its delivery partners on reaching this significant milestone and looks forward to seeing the project progress towards operation in late 2027.
